Their dense, water-absorbing mats (especially hāpu'u tree ferns) act like giant sponges, capturing mist and rain to regulate watersheds and prevent erosion in steep forests. Ferns provide critical microhabitats for endemic insects and birds within their fronds, and their deep roots bind fragile slopes. Having evolved in isolation for millions of years, many Hawaiian ferns are found nowhere else, forming an irreplaceable foundation of biodiversity and cultural significance long before other plants arrived.
