About the event
Carpool meeting point: Niu Valley Shopping Center's main parking lot near 7-Eleven (565 Halemaumau St, Honolulu, HI 96821).
Bring a mask to carpool.
Parking:
We are asking (if possible) to park at the shopping center and carpool to Anolani St. to minimize traffic and crowding. Please be respectful to our neighbors, keep voices down, and don't block the turnaround in the cul de sac, their trash bins, or mailboxes.
If parking on Anolani St., please park across the street from the houses.
What to bring:
– Clothing that can get dirty (long sleeve shirt and pants highly recommended!!)
– SHOES ARE REQUIRED
– Reusable water bottle(s) and plenty of water (1/2 gallon recommended)
– Mosquito repellent
– Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen
– Snacks and any medications needed
– Rain jacket (in case of inclement weather)
Please Note: There are no bathrooms at the site. Volunteers will need to trek in the bushes or drive to the nearest bathroom at Kawaikui Beach Park.
TOOLS:
All community tools and gloves have been sanitized. We will provide tools and gloves, but you are welcome to bring your own tools/gloves (small hand saws and pick mattocks are welcome).
ACTIVITIES:
- A short hike to the restoration site in Pia Valley. This is a great time to check out what we are all about. See our vision for the valley with your own eyes and talk story.
- We will share a brief history of the area, our organization, watershed health, native ecosystems, and the cultural importance of ahupua'a land management.
- We will oli (Hawaiian chant), go over invasive species identification, removal, and safety protocols.
It's a chill day with some light clearing, watering, weeding, and planting.
