About the event

What to expect:

Meet Jenna Patague at ANRPO's East Baseyard. The address is 1480 Higgins Rd., Building 1595.

Our day will be a two-part series, starting with a ginger sweep and ending with an exploration tour of Mauna o Kaʻala. Ginger sweeps are a specialized task, where we will be walking in transects targeting kahili ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) within the bog. Volunteers are expected to be able to hike in difficult terrain and in variable weather conditions.

What to bring:

– ANRPO will provide gear (weeding tools and footwear, if needed). If volunteers choose not to use spiked tabis, they will need to bring a pair of good hiking shoes.

– Clothing that can get dirty (long-sleeve shirt and pants are highly recommended!!)

– Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

– Reusable water bottle(s) and plenty of water (at least ½ gallon).

– Lunch, snacks, and any medications needed.

– Bug spray (in case of mosquitoes).

– Rain jacket (in case of inclement weather).

– Extra change of clothes and WARM clothes if you get cold easily.

Restrooms:

There's a restroom at the East Baseyard. At Kaʻala, there is a compostable toilet. However, during the ginger sweeps, volunteers are expected to use the restroom in the forest. Staff will carry toilet paper on hand if needed.
